Friesian-L is an old fashioned mailing list. It runs on a standard that hearkens back to the early days of Internet mailing lists. Hence the -L in the name and the style of subscription. Most people aren't familar with those old style mailing lists so here is a page that will hopefully help clear up some of the confusions.

High Volume List? Friesian-L is classified as a High Volume List. This means that we often send up to 200 individual email messages to each member a day. When you include the fact that pictures and attachments are allowed up to 300000 bytes in size, you can end up with more mail then your mailbox can possibily hold.

Digest A digest is a method of gathering together multiple postings into one large message that is mailed out between 1 and 5 times a day. The digests are set to be a certain size (100 KB) and mailed when they reach that size.

No-Mail This means that you are still subscribed to the list, but not recieving mail from the list. You can decide to go No-Mail if you are going to be absent from your email for a while and would find it inconvient to come back to 100's of messages from the list.

Subscribed This means that you are a member of the list and if not set to No-Mail you will recieve messages as other members send them - or a daily set of digests. There is no cost to subscribe to Friesian-L.

Attachments Attachments are pictures or other things included with an email message. Freisan-L allows messages up to 300 KB or 300,000 Bytes in total through the list. 300 KB, 300,000 Bytes Total This means that your message can only be, including pictures AND the text in the message

Archives These are the online listings of all the messages sent in a week by week period on the list. They are available at Friesian-L Archives

• Thread All Messages in a Conversation beginning from the same message.


• Subject All Messages Posted in a Conversation begining under the same subject line.


• Author All Messages posted by a particular Person.


• Date All Messages Posted on a particular Date.

List Down This simply means that due to some technical difficulty, power loss, or internet down time, the list is unavailable, or "Down".

Bounced-Bounces These are messages that the admins and list-moms recieve indicating there is a problem with your subscription. Bounces occur for 3 reasons:

• Mailbox Full You can't accept any more messages, and your subscription is set to No-Mail until you empty your mailbox and restart your mail.


• Server Error There is something wrong with the email account on your server and we can't get mail to you. Your account is set to No-Mail until you get back online and restart your mail.


• AOL URL Error AOL rejects messages with certain url's in them randomly. This can cause multiple members with AOL email addresses to have their subscriptions bounced to No-Mail until they restart the mail.

AOL Errors AOL has a very restrictive policy in place to prevent spam being sent to their members. This policy while in place to protect people from spam, and viruses has a tendancy to intercept legitimate mail from small or private ISP's like ours. We generally have a mass bounce of AOL members once a month or more.

URL Issues URL's also known as website addresses, are those links that you include to direct people to your website or other websites that might have interesting information. Unfortunately AOL rejects URL's from free websites or smaller ISP's or other sites randomly and they can cause problems.

Yahoo! Users    Due to some changes recently made by Yahoo! they are no longer accepting the mai l you have requested from Friesian-L. They have classified the list as Spam and are denying the mail due to volume and "user complaints". We are completely un able to deliver your Friesian-L mail successfuly at this time. We are attemptin g to contact them however we have not had a response back at this time. All Yahoo! users should still be able to send mail to the list and view the arch ives without a problem. If you need assistance, Please contact the admins, or s end a mail with HELP as the subject to the list and one of the list moms will he lp you find the archive page.

Spam Any unsolicited email. We try very hard not to be spam. In fact with a lot of work, and a little luck you should never see spam through our list due to the fact we only allow members to post messages and because we require a human to confirm the subscriptions. If we see an odd or suscpicious address we mail that address and make sure that it's a real live Friesian loving human on the other end!

Rejected Messages Messages you send to the list might occasionally be rejected for the following 3 reasons:

• Message to Large If your message is larger then 300 KB, or 300,000 Bytes total it will be rejected because it is to large to fit through the list filters.


• Message has to many Addresses As part of our effort to prevent spam from coming through the list the list will not allow you to send mail to the list and more then 5 people at once, or as a carbon copy or blind carbon copy.


• Address is not subscribed The email address you are sending your email from is not subscribed to the list, or not recognized by the list as one that is subscribed. This is a provision put in place to protect you from spammers.

Restarting Mail Going into the webpage and telling the list to start sending you messages again.

Unsubscribing Removing your address from the list rolls, you are no long a member, you are no longer able to recieve messages to your email inbox.

Resubscribing Adding or re-adding your address to the list rolls enabling you to recieve messages from the list. Only necessary if you've removed your email address previously or if you are told you are not a member.

How Subscriptions Work Friesian-L sends messages to and allows messages from only the email address you subscribe to the list. This means that you can only send mail from the email address you signed up. No matter how many other email addresses you have. The list will only send messages to that address.

What if I want to Send or Recieve messages at work and Home? Sure! No Problem! You just sign up the additional address. For Example:

• To sign up your work address so you can send mail from work but so you don't have a flood Go to the subscription page. Subscribe your work address, when you recieve the conformation of subscription go in and set it to No-Mail. Voila! You can send messages from work, but you won't recieve them.


• To sign up other addresses Just follow the same proceedure and set each email account to either recieve individual mail, digests, or no-mail.

Monthly Reminder This is a brief email sent to your account with the password you chose for that address. This password is the one you need to access the member options page.

Prayer/Light Requests A request for help from the list. A frequent topic for posts.

Crate/In My Crate/Going to My Crate An old phrase indicating that the person in question is being just a bit "wicked".

Guy on the Ladder A reference for the part of the mail server that looks out over the firewall and tosses messages out over said firewall to your mailboxes. When the server has problems he's said to have fallen off his ladder. We currently have two throwing the mail out right now. When the server has problems a humerous story about the guy on the ladder tries to appear to explain the problem.

Keyboard Alert The post is going to contain something funny enough to make you spit drinks or food all over your keyboard, ruining it permanently. (Not to be taken lightly, there are ruined keyboards aplenty in the list's past).
